Vinnie - Thurday night

Just a friendly reminder about the Faith Hill gig on NBC Thursday night.Gonna add that to the collection just because it's a rarity to see Vinnie on TV.


Does anyone remember about 6-7 yrs. ago, Vinnie played a gig on TV w/Sting. I think it was like a benefit gig similar to Farm Aid. Vinnie had that natural wood finish Gretsch kit happenin'. Does anyone own this on video and does Vinnie go off on it? I didn't catch the whole thing when it was on TV.

Someone asked what time it came on TV. It's at 9:00pm EST. The gig was taped and is airing Thursday night, I have no idea when they acually played the gig. I kinda wish that it was live,but who cares? We are catching Vinnie on the tube!!

Vinnie was solid. I didn't like how they spliced the video over one audio performance. There are a lot of places where the audio/video doesn't match.

I liked the double bass triplets at the end of the one of the tunes. Tasty. But overall, pretty bland pop stuff.

I thot I'd already see some reviews of this gig. About 1/2 way over on the west coast. I never really listened to FHill B4, but my first thots were Vinnie was ROCK solid for this type of music. Great sound!
Love to hear a reply of the performance...cool grooves you dug, any Vinne-isms I can go back to and catch on the video if present.
Personally, I dug his cymbal work! I thought he used his cymbals colorfully, especially in transition out of a chorus.

Being this forum is dedicated to Vinnie, I thought it would be interesting to see what others thought of the FHill gig...

Vinnie Colitis...i was never into the guy before and i'm less so,now.He BUTCHERED 'Cry Just A Little' with his psuedo fusion drop beat casserole take of the tune.He could have built that into a heart wrenching ballad-but no,another"Look Ma,No Hands rendition".Groove?...thank the bass player for any 'groove' that was present.He was damn good.
But,then again who's watching Faith's mouth when she's singin'?

I'm kind of surprised to hear of Vinnie Colaiuta taking a country gig, but hey - Steve Gadd played on dozens of coutnry records in the 70s and 80s, none of which are as much fun to listen to as Steely Dan's "Aja." Still, it takes a tremendous amount of feel to make a country song come off right, and it has nothing to do with "chops," per se. That's what's so interesting about Vinnie taking a job with Faith Hill. His trademark is his blazing chops, and a Faith Hill song would require just the opposite: tons of feel.

I'm not going to argue, but if you think that Faith Hill doesn't have a huge voice, you don't know anything about vocal. The songs are a matter of taste and liking them is another topic. But she can flat out sing, period, end of story. And to question anything Vinnie does is just hilarious. He is one of the most influential and imitated drummers ever. To not like his interpretation of a song is a matter of taste, but to insult the way he plays his fills makes you sound like an uneducated, bitter fool. As for Faith her voice and her record sales speak for themselves.

Vinnie w/Faith Hill...That's DISGUSTING. Trey did a fine job...Hill from Goodletsville will be going for a cameo on the Simpsons and looking for a feature film,to display her 'acting' talents,next...oh,the humanity.

Hey guys, Vinnie's a professional. That means he makes his money by playing, not by picking and choosing the gigs that meet his high musical standards. And I'm sure that was one sweet paying gig. As for anyone who would question his talent; go listen to Little Green Rosetta from Zappa's Joe's Garage. If that doesn't change your opinion, you ain't listening

As far as questioning ANY musician, there's nothing wrong with it. Vinnie might be one of the most influential drummers to the under 30 crowd, but I'm aware of way too much music to be so influenced by any one thing (not only putting a hole in your "uneducated" theory, but exposing your own lack of experience).

I was really looking forward to the show because of Vinnie. I'm really resistant to country but this was something different. Sure, a few of the songs were cream puff crap, but Vinnie polished the tunes with his golden touch(I especially liked the one that was in '6'. I didn't catch the title). What pleased me the most was that a few different cameras showed him quite a bit. Not as much as some would like, but it surprised me. Man, is it just me or is Carlos Santana not the most overrated 'Mars', 'Guitar Center' wanker? When Faith Hill mentioned something about living legends she should have been talking about Vinnie. JMHO

Hey, Clint - while I dug & dig a lot of what Carlos has done in his career [not the least of which has been having great percussionists, & hiring Rodney Holmes & Dennis Chambers for the drum/hot seat!!]; but you are right [& I had to laugh!!] when you made that Santana/Mars [incidentally now bankrupt]/VC statement - CS's playing is severely overrated, altho I commend him for his success & attitude ...yeah, Faith shoulda really been referring to the MAN, VC ...
